Bhopal:

Some people in Bhopal forced a woman riding in the back seat of a scooter to remove her hijab on Saturday, drawing widespread criticism on social media. The woman was reportedly riding in the back seat of a man when some people stopped them on a narrow street in Nagar Islam in Bhopal and asked her to remove her hijab.

The images show people taking off their hijab as she protested, visibly crying. In the video, a man is also heard telling the woman that she was an “embarrassment” to the community.

Police said the people who had gathered there suspected the woman was with a Hindu, so they forced the scooter to stop.

No police case has been filed. Two of the men who were seen stopping the scooter were detained and released after a warning not to repeat the act.

“A man and woman came to Islam Nagar in the afternoon. Some people stopped them and asked him to take off his hijab and show his face. People are suspected of believing the man to be Hindu and the girl Muslim,” said the police officer. RS Verma told the PTI news agency.

“No cases have been registered, but preventive measures have been taken against the two men seen in the video, who were warned not to repeat such an act,” Verma said.

Last month, two people were arrested in Bangalore in a moral watch case after video showed them assaulting a bank employee for having a Muslim colleague on his motorcycle.
