Bhopal:

Three people, including a teenager, were injured after a speeding car struck a crowd during a Durga idol dive in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal on Saturday night.

A video of the incident, shared by a passerby, shows the driver of the car reversing at high speed while people are seen trying to save themselves by moving out of the way of the vehicle. A 16-year-old boy was reportedly dragged by the car and is said to be in critical condition.

The incident occurred on the road in front of the Bhopal train station as the procession advanced. An on-duty police chief also suffered minor leg injuries, a police officer quoted as saying by the PTI news agency said.

“The police are trying to identify the accused with the help of CCTV footage and some videos filmed by devotees,” said DIG Bhopal Irshad Wali.

This is the second such incident to occur on Saturday.

In neighboring Chhattisgarh, one person was killed and 16 others injured after they were allegedly hit by a car during a dive possession in the Jashpur state district.

In a tweet, Chhattisgarh’s Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel expressed his sadness over the incident and assured that justice would be served.

“The Jashpur incident is very sad and heartbreaking. The culprits were immediately arrested. Prima facie action was also taken against the police officers who appeared guilty. An investigation was ordered. No one will be saved. Justice will be served to all.” May God rest in peace the souls of the departed, “Baghel said in a Hindi tweet.

Chhattisgarh police arrested two defendants and said they will take strict action against them.
