- Terrorists hiding in a village opened heavy fire on the search party.
An army officer and four other soldiers were killed in action during an encounter between security forces and terrorists in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, authorities said.
Sources said a heavy shooting was taking place in the Surankote area with at least four or five heavily armed terrorists who crossed into the country a few days ago.
The counter-insurgency operation was launched in a village near Dera Ki Gali in the first hours after intelligence reports on his presence, they said.
Undercover terrorists fired at the search parties, resulting in fierce shooting and serious injuries to a junior officer or JCO and four other soldiers. They died from their injuries.
The encounter with the terrorists was happening and more details are expected, a defense spokesman said.
Authorities said there were reports of the presence of a group of heavily armed terrorists in the Chamrer forest, after they managed to sneak through the Line of Control a few days ago.
Reinforcements have been dispatched to the area to block all escape routes for the terrorists, they said.
The incident comes amid growing terrorist activity in the Kashmir Valley in recent weeks and the resurgence of ceasefire violations along the Line of Control with Pakistan.
Over the past week, security forces detained more than 900 people on union territory in response to the killing of seven civilians.
