Brin filed a petition to dissolve the marriage citing “irreconcilable differences” as per the court documents. The couple also has a 3 year old son. The details of their split have been kept private and the couple has requested the court to keep the documents sealed.
According to the website People, Brin’s attorney wrote in a filing that “petitioner is a co-founder of Google and one of the wealthiest and most famous technology entrepreneurs in the world. Because of the high-profile nature of their relationship, there is likely to be significant public interest in their dissolution and child custody issues. Of great concern is that such publicity puts their minor child at risk of danger, harassment, and even kidnapping, if the specifics of their day-to-day whereabouts are exposed to the public.”
Brin, 48, was earlier married to 23andMe co-founder Anne Wojcicki, but the couple had a divorce in 2015 after 8 years. They have a son Benji, 13, and a daughter Chloe, 11.
Brin co-founded Google with Larry Page in 1998 which later formed the holding company Alphabet Inc. He and Page left the holding company in 2019 but they continued to be the shareholders.
As per Monica Mazzei, a partner at Sideman & Bancroft LLP in San Francisco, as reported by People magazine, Brin and Shanahan likely have a prenuptial agreement since the relationship began long after he became a billionaire.
She also said that philanthropy can also play a role in the divorce agreement.
The news comes a year after Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates parted ways, which was about three years after Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Scott divorced.
The Gates couple divided a $145 billion fortune while Bezos had $137 billion at stake when they broke up.
